About LCLMT
Dedication
To the Repairer of Broken Walls.
To those who struggle, and
to those who seek to help them.
Mission
To explore existing computer technology and produce
documentation to make computer technology available at lowest cost to
libraries and other small community organizations.
From Idea to Drawing Board
The LCLMT project began with the germ of an idea that came
during a Bible study. It began as a thought. I, a writer, a trainer,
a technology tinkererwhat could I do?
For years I have been working with and around public
libraries, providing technical support, writing software, writing training
documentation, and generally trying to find ways to make technology help
librarians get their work done. But I have also seen and read about
library users who come to libraries with information needs but few computer
skills. And what about those who have lost jobs and are trying to gain technical skills to
find new employment? Then there are others who are involved in welfare-to-work
programs.
How can I help in these computer training efforts? One key
factor in all training is practice and review. Many organizations offer
basic computer training. Few are able to provide sufficient resource to
enable trainees to practice the skills they are acquiring. In many cases
there is no computer in the home. And few training centers can afford to
acquire and maintain computer equipment sufficiently (not to mention space)
to provide both training and practice labs.
In this project I will be focusing of practical solutions
to some of these problems.
Discussions
Pondering this question led me also to consider the plight
of small public libraries, small schools, non-profit organizations, and churches.
All of these are cash-strapped, but highly in need of computer technology to
fulfill their missions. Interestingly, the question above, if answered
successfully for trainees in various computer training programs, also
provides an answer to the technical needs of these small organizations.
With this question, then, the Low Cost, Low Maintenance
Technology Project was born in concept. In the past there was little traction
to get it off the ground. Currently, I'm working on some new resources that
will make it possible. Stay tuned for more info.
